Entry 4: 1st GROUP ASSIGNMENT.
Hi. I’m back. Well, guess what? We are assigned with a new assignment,
and it’s a group work. This time we will be examining the accessibility and
facilities for disable students in our campus. We were gathered in a group of 6
consisting of me, Aida, Joji, Fatin, Aina and Aziemah. So the 6 of us were task
to do research and evaluation about facilities in our faculty whether it is
suitable with disable students or it’s the opposite of that. Our lecturer let
us go out for an hour for us to examine the whole faculty and detect the lack
in providing disable friendly environment and to point out any features that
holds up to disable peoples.
As of then, we listed out the features and facilities that we think is
necessary for a faculty to have in order to provide a disable friendly
environment. For quick example, a flat disabled pathway for the usage of people
with walking disability, braille code at elevator’s button and so on. We then
take a very detailed look outside of the class since walk throughout whole CS2
and CS1 building and then we are back to CS2. There are so many lacking parts
in the faculty that may bring harms to disabled people since the facilities are
definitely not disable friendly at all. Even as an individual who are perfect
in all 5 sense, we get that we also have problems with the facilities. In short,
the facilities are mostly uncomfortable for the usage either disabled people or
even normal people.
Let me tells you how does the facilities in CS2 building works. So yeah,
we have the foyer in front of the main entrance, and first of all, the main
entrance is not disabled friendly since for people with wheelchair as there is
no disabled pathway for them and they will have a hard time in getting their
wheelchair passing the higher floor to enter the building. After that, there
are a lift provided to go to upper level, but the lift is so small that it
could fit only one person with wheelchair at a time. On top of that, the person
can’t even turn their wheelchair to face the door lift because the space was
too small that they can even barely move their wheelchair. There’s a disabled
pathway to go down the hallway but the pathway is too steep and it is very
dangerous for people with walking disability and wheelchairs since they might
go down too fast without any safety around them.
For CS1, we have a 4 level twin buildings which are connected at level 2
and 3. At the main building, we have a foyer and most of the class for the
students are mainly located at CS1. The major problem is, there is no
alternative for people with walking disability to go to the class at higher
level at all. There is no pathway made for disable students all around the
building. There is a lift located at level 1 of the building, but to go to the
lift, students will have to go up by stairs through the foyer and then another
stairs before they can even meet the lift’s buttons. How hard must it be for a
student with disability to continue and pursue their studies when the
facilities for them are very limited?
So from our evaluation and research, we come up with ideas on how to
improve the facilities in the faculty to make it more disabled friendly and
gives hopes to the students with disability. We did some research on how does
other countries applies disabled friendly environment in their campus, and surprisingly
there are a lot of institutional that are concerns about these kind of
students. Therefore, we did some editing and point out the places that are in
need for renovation so that these students can be more ease at heart every time
they go to their class. No more worrying about the difficulties to even get
themselves sitting in the class on time with their lacking in ability.
This assignment really helps me and my classmates realize on how
important it is for us to be concern about other people who didn’t share the
gift that we have, and for us to be grateful to be born with all senses
completely. Disabled people have the same desire like us, the normal people to
learn, to study and to excel in their life so why not we make it a better place
for them? This subject really teach me a lot of things, not just how to be
creative, but how critical thinking and creativity makes us a better person in
considering others who are lacking. With this assignment ended, I just hope
that this assignment will be keep used as a fix assignment so that our
generation will know on how important it is to be critical about things around
you.
Love, Bell 슈아.
